I actually come from a different industry, so I imagined a job in the IT sector to be like on TV. However, I learned on my first day that this is very far-fetched and that the clichés about developers are not at all true, although the occasional lunch break, during which people talked shop, did feel like I was on another planet. Now, after almost two years, I particularly appreciate these lunch breaks. No matter how stressful our day is and no matter how big we have grown in these two years - a lunch break together is a must. Everyone waits anxiously for the first "I'm going to Billa, anyone coming?" - and then, for a short time, work is forgotten and it's like a cozy meal among very good friends.
In the back office, our day is very varied, no day is like the other and rarely as you would have planned - but that's exactly what I enjoy most about my job. I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved in the last few years - but above all of the fact that, despite the enormous pressure to perform and the rapid growth, we've never forgotten our sense of humor and family-like way of dealing with each other.

## My work at fiskaly
My journey with fiskaly began at the end of 2018 (at that time the company was still called Codewerkstatt). As the first full-time employee, I started with frontend development (React). Pretty soon, tasks in the backend (Node.js) were added. Things got really exciting when our work on the implementation of the German Cash Security Ordinance (<https://kassensichv.net/>) really took off. Extensive requirements had to be taken into account in product development and the products had to be evaluated and certified in certification procedures, including Common Criteria (an international standard for testing and evaluating the security features of IT products).
Since my start at fiskaly, the number of employees has multiplied and the scope of my duties has increasingly expanded and shifted to management activities regarding product development and certification. Nevertheless, I still see myself as a software developer (currently mainly in Java) and try to invest as much time as possible into that. I enjoy being part of a motivated, multicultural team that overcomes challenges together, practices high quality as well as agile software development, and tries to improve constantly.

Christoph joined fiskaly in the early days before it was founded. Even though he has taken on management tasks as technical product owner, he feels like he is still a developer in his heart with a passion for coding.

Products for fiscalization can be operated in two possible ways: Via the Internet in a cloud or by additional hardware at the cash register. Modern POS systems often rely on cloud-based fiscalization products. Fiscalization in the cloud offers a number of advantages over hardware based ones.
1. **Fast and Cost-Effective Integration**
The integration of cloud-based fiscalization products - as products from the fiskaly SIGN family - into POS systems is fast and cost-effective, as the required data is largely exchanged automatically via interfaces. This means that new legal requirements or new functions can also be integrated easily and seamlessly. Likewise, switching to another POS provider is unproblematic, as the cloud-based software can be easily adapted.
**2. Updates via Software Update**
With fiskaly SIGN, updates are automatic and therefore cost-effective. The updates are installed on the software side. The users do not have any tedious extra work.
**3. Flexibility and Fast Scaling**
The use of fiskaly SIGN enables high flexibility in terms of the number of fiscal security units deployed. In addition, the number of connected cash registers and the number of transactions can be scaled quickly.
**4. Independence from Hardware Components**
fiskaly SIGN does not require local hardware installations in the form of an SD card, USB sticks or TPM module at the POS. This eliminates the need for on-site installations and the associated costs and time (for example, the deployment of a technician). This is important in the long run because hardware fiscalization products have a certificate lifetime, after which the hardware must be replaced. With no hardware components, there is no maintenance and nothing can get broken or lost.
**5. Transparent Costs**
fiskaly SIGN can be deployed cost-effectively, making them cheap for customers to buy and operate. There are never additional costs due to hardware failures. fiskaly SIGN doesn't have hidden costs, so it is transparent in its costs and cost-effective in the long run.
**6. Highest Data Security**
By law, the data from Germany must be stored in Germany. fiskaly meets all legal requirements for every country.
**7. Security & Flexibility through Contactless Delivery**
fiskaly SIGN. is cloud-based, so it can be delivered securely and contactlessly to taxpayers. This provides maximum flexibility in the delivery, as it can be made at any time — even in lockdown.
**8. Easy Monitoring & Compatibility with Other Service Providers**
fiskaly SIGN is compatible with all modern systems because it works with APIs. Archiving systems, accounting programs and other tools can be connected to your system in just a few steps without affecting the POS system. Central monitoring allows all TSS etc. and their activities to be tracked at a glance, even across multiple business locations.
**9. Easy Data Management & Data Export**
In the event of a cash register inspection, the data can be made available to the auditor quickly and easily by means of export. Via the dashboard, you always have your data available and can manage it with little effort.

### What to Consider Before Deploying Hardware Fiscalization Products
Hardware fiscalization products create the signature and store the information on site. To ensure tamper protection, the hardware has a certificate life (5 to 7 years). After the certificate expires, the hardware must be replaced. Hardware products are high-maintenance, costly and time-consuming. They are also difficult to scale because hardware is required per each POS system or per network.

fiskalcheck enables a simple check of the QR code of receipts, eReceipts, etc. issued in Germany. ### Fighting inflation

CEO Johannes Ferner correctly stated, "The inflation rate continued to rise in July and is now at 9.3% - we are all clearly feeling these effects."

For this reason, the leadership team decided to compensate for the inflation for all employees through voluntary additional payments on top of the regular salary. A budget of 100,000 euros was set for this purpose, which will be used for fiskaly staff to tackle the immediate challenges until the end of the year.

### Well-being = company success

Our leadership team agrees that the company’s success depends directly on our well-being. Our team appreciates this simple but effective measure.

### Further support

It is unclear how the situation in Austria will develop in the coming months, but the trend does not indicate that inflation will decrease. This leaves the further course of action of the leadership open, but the development of the situation will continue to be monitored. CEO Johannes Ferner does not rule out further financial support.

## fiskaly's Cloud TSS - on cloud 7
The [fiskaly SIGN products](https://www.fiskaly.com/solutions) form the only, true cloud TSS solutions for the fiscalization of transactions of a POS system on the market. Certified in Germany until 2029 and 100% compliant with the law.
The big advantage of this solution is that merchants can purchase the TSSs via a monthly rental model - without any hardware at all. Another major advantage over a hardware solution is the reduced effort for the customer, as updates and certificate term extensions of the cloud TSSs run in the background and the customer is unaware of them. In the case of hardware TSSs, the hardware components have to be replaced after certain periods (3, 5 or a maximum of 7 years) or in the case of updates, which involves a great deal of effort and expense for the customer. In addition, the support of the cloud application is not the responsibility of the customer's own IT department but of the provider of such a cloud solution, in this case fiskaly, which further reduces the customer's effort.
**Details for technicians**
The Electronic Recording System (ERS) communicates with the TSS via the embedding interface (Secure Element API, SE-API) specified in [BSI TR-03151 and BSI TR-03151-AMT](https://www.bsi.bund.de/DE/Themen/Unternehmen-und-Organisationen/Standards-und-Zertifizierung/Technische-Richtlinien/TR-nach-Thema-sortiert/tr03151/tr03151_node.html) using a TLS connection. The SE-API is integrated into the SMAERS. The embedding interface is accessed via a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) based API. An RPC request is sent to an http endpoint of the embedding interface, which responds with an RPC response. The binding interface acts as a server here. The data of a request and a response are sent as protocol buffers.
The argument of a network failure is not a problem in the case of a cloud TSS. The legislator explicitly allows the electronic input system (cash register) to continue operating even if the technical security equipment is disrupted by a network failure. The checkout process continues and the receipt must contain the information about the TSS failure.

## Interaction of the solutions - TSE4CLOUD
The new concept "TSE4CLOUD" developed by hokona and fiskaly combines hokona's SAP Customer Checkout POS system with the fiskaly SIGN DE product. In this way, the two IT expert companies create an all-round package for checkouts with fast integration, strong support, a know-how base and optimal legal compliance.
Simplified, the process of the concept runs as follows:
1. The transaction data created on the SAP Customer Checkout is communicated in encrypted form to fiskaly's cloud TSS. 2. In the second step, the security device signs the individual products and the receipt. 3. In the final step, the TSS sends the signed transaction back to the POS system.
The customer doesn't notice anything, gets the signed receipt in the shortest time and could enjoy the benefits and design of SAP Customer Checkout.
TSE4CLOUD is always up to date, is rented monthly and the contract runs as long as the retailer needs it. The requirements of the cash register security regulation ([KassenSichV](https://kassensichv.net/fiskademy)) are fulfilled by TSE4CLOUD.

fiskaly is like family to me; that much was obvious to me very quickly, after the first job interview, which was pleasant and relaxed. Fun and work have never been combined as beautifully as here!
Especially in a startup, there are not always clear tracks to follow for every topic and every challenge, but that's what makes it so appealing to me. To find your own paths, to acquire knowledge yourself, to discuss things in a team, to move forward in a team. ## No hardware Cloud TSS
On this occasion we would like to clarify that the TSE solution from fiskaly is a **pure software solution** and does not contain any hardware component (at the cash registers) in any form.
We point out that fiskaly SMAERS **does not use TPM** (Trusted Platform Module).

The cooperation between fiskaly and [snap](https://www.snapconsult.com/) resulted in a special solution for SAP ERP and S/4HANA, which enables a fully integrated implementation of a Cloud TSS. The ABAP based TSS can be integrated into existing SAP POS cash sales processes either by itself or by an “all-round carefree package”.
The solution also enables optimization at the POS: payment terminals such as Hobex, Wirecard, Six or Cardcomplete can be integrated directly into the SAP or S/4HANA system!

The cooperation between fiskaly and snap resulted in a special solution for SAP ERP and S/4HANA, which enables a fully integrated implementation of a Cloud TSS.

## Efficient and cost-effective implementation of the Kassensicherungsverordnung.
From October 2020, cash register systems must be adapted in accordance with the Kassensicherungsverordnung. However, the regulations and challenges associated with this will create hurdles for many companies. We are extremely pleased to have finally received the TSS certificate for our CSP‑L. Reaching this milestone is a big step because the TSS CSP‑L component is a core part of the Technical Safety System (TSS).
“I am extremely pleased to receive the first fully comprehensive TSS CSP‑L certificate for fiskaly Cloud-TSS. This again shows that fiskaly is the right partner on the topic of KassenSichV,” Johannes Ferner, CEO fiskaly.

We received the TSS certificate for our CSP‑L. Reaching this milestone is a big step because the TSS CSP‑L component is a core part of the Technical Safety System (TSS).

1. You can log in to fiskaly with your Google, LinkedIn or Microsoft account. Alternatively, you can also create an account with your email address. 2. Following registration, you will receive an email to activate your account. The activation link is valid for 5 minutes. 3. The first time you log in, you will be asked to create an organisation. Create a test organisation. To do this, fill in the name of the organisation (step 1) and the address fields (step 2). 4. In the last step, the address of the organisation is stored by default. For testing purposes, you can also create the organisation without entering the billing address. 5. Click on "Create" to finish. Now you can test the fiskaly system for free.

I like to read … a lot. The clever app on my mobile phone tells me, this year I’ve already read 10 books, 2.714 pages. What I like even more than reading, is being able to talk about what I’ve read with other people. To have different opinions and perspectives only makes it more enjoyable and interesting. There are so many stories you can get out of a piece of writing once it is a shared experience; discussions you would probably not have had otherwise.
This is why Sylvia and I pitched the idea of a book club to Simon, our COO here at fiskaly, in the summer of 2021. We were convinced that this would be a chance to get to know our colleagues better and learn from one another. What we also wanted this project to become, is something that has an impact outside of the company and supports a charitable cause. From the beginning we had an organisation in mind that has made supporting refugees in Austria its main mission. And so it was decided; for every member of the book club, fiskaly would donate a certain amount of money to a charitable cause on a monthly basis.
People becoming refugees is not new. It’s happening all over the world, all the time and it requires ongoing and long term support to make a difference in people's lives. These days, with the ongoing war in Ukraine, the reality of people being forced to flee their homes is probably more present in our minds than it has been at any given time before.
Since 2002, [Ute Bock](https://www.fraubock.at/de/) has been the leading NGO when it comes to supporting refugees in Austria. They know how to provide shelter, do consulting, organise German classes and so much more. We cannot contribute to their cause with our skills or our expertise. What we can do is educate ourselves, not look away and donate to an ongoing effort to improve the lives of people who had to leave behind a lot, sometimes everything, and start over again.
In April of 2022 we are reading _The Song Of Achilles_ by Madeline Miller and I am already looking forward to discussing it with my fellow readers.

### 1. Arranging the Cultural Fit
Our fiskaly team will reach out to you to arrange an interview for the Cultural Fit. You only need to enter your availability in the calendar link which is attached to the “Interview Availability” email. After that, you will get a confirmation email when your interview will take place. Please be sure to check your spam folder too - sometimes our emails end up there.
One thing is for sure: I was thrilled with how quickly and professionally the arrangement took place for my Cultural Fit.
### 2. Are we a cultural fit?
The answer starts right here. On the one hand, we want to plunge right into our culture with you and show you what it means to work for fiskaly. On the other hand, we would like to get to know you as a person. The main question is: Do we fit together? There are two different approaches depending on what position you are applying for.
**Non-technical Cultural Fit**
From the non-technical point of view, questions about your preferred working environment, your experiences in the past, and how you react to criticism are good starters for us to get the conversation rolling. In addition to that, we like to ask about your accumulated knowledge in the respective industry you applied for. Hint: Prepare for those questions.
**Technical Cultural Fit**
The technical cultural fit is adapted to applicants who applied for a job in one of our development departments. It is similar to the non-technical Cultural Fit regarding the starting questions, but we like to spice it up by asking development related questions like “Did you ever make a mistake which led to a site/app crashing?” and “What was your reaction to that? What were your learnings?”.
Our main goal of the interview, regardless of whether it is the non-technical or the technical Cultural Fit, is to get to know you as a person. It helps us find out if you are a great fit for fiskaly.
We like to chat in a relaxed atmosphere and I can assure you our fiskaly employees are very dear so there is no need to be nervous. 😄
### 3. It's time for questions 🤓

If you arrived at this step of the application process it means our cultures harmonize. You like our company culture and we liked you as a person. It’s time for the Skill & Team Fit, the third step of our application process! We are as excited as you are, so let’s dive right into the three steps. 👇
### 1. Meeting the team
The procedure repeats. 🔁 You will get an email from us where we would like you to enter your availability in the calendar. After that you will get a confirmation email of our interview date. We will also attach a small challenge to that email which we would like you to prepare for our upcoming interview. This time you will be in an interview with your potential future team.
### 2. Ready for a challenge?
You probably guessed it right already - you are meeting your potential future team because we want to know if you are a good fit for us. Our team members and our teamwork are very important to us - that’s why we set such a high value on finding the right person. This is our get-to-know phase where everyone introduces themselves. Furthermore, we would like to know what skills you can inspire us with and what you can contribute to our team on our journey to make fiscalization processes easier for our customers. Your prepared challenge sheet is the perfect way to show us what you are capable of. Again there are two different approaches now regarding the challenge.
**Non-technical challenge**
The non-technical challenge includes tasks which are related to the department you are applying for. I applied for the position of Content Creator in the marketing department, hence i got tasks like writing a short paragraph of a blog, creating a LinkedIn post and correcting a text.
**Technical challenge**
The technical challenge contains different kinds of tasks. I talked to Francesca, our new Developer, and she told me that she prepared a coding challenge for her Skill Fit. She got the information she needed from our development team, coded the frontend of an application and presented her work to the team step-by-step.
All in all, different positions demand different challenges. The main goal for us is to find out if you fit in our team, what your working process looks like and what skills you can bring to the team.
### 3. It’s time for questions - again 🤓
Like in the Cultural Fit interview we take our time for a question session for the Skill & Team Fit as well. You can ask us everything you want to know about our teams, our employees and about the skills we can bring to the table. Again, don’t be shy - we love it when you show interest.
With those three points of the Skill & Team Fit your application process is finished - you can lean back.
**What happens next?**

The war in Ukraine is shocking and alarming. With every further day, it is becoming harder to grasp the brutality against this peaceful nation.
For me, Johannes Ferner, CEO of fiskaly, the war in Ukraine is a personal matter. While doing my Master’s degree, I spent a semester in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Kharkiv was known to be a wonderful city with beautiful and relaxing locations, also famous for its tech experts. Further I got the chance to see Kiew, a magnificent capital with many historic sights.
I experienced the free country of Ukraine when the Maidan events were starting out. In this time I got to know amazing people striving for a democratic and free nation. These people and their values are now under heavy attack.

I made invaluable Ukrainian friends during that time. I can not just be a bystander. It is time to act.
Our startup, fiskaly, was founded 3 years ago. Now it employs more than 35 people out of 10 nations. We believe in an open and diverse world, and as a company we developed two ways how we can help.
First, we changed our recruiting targets. We support people who are now dislocated from their homes or aim to migrate. We offer them access to either Austrian or international employment at fiskaly. We assist people in getting the “Red-White-Red”-card (Austrian work residence permit).
Second, we have contributed € 10.000 to the international Red Cross co-founded organization “[Nachbar in Not](https://nachbarinnot.orf.at/)”. We are going to continue supporting the charity focused on helping people in Ukraine.
